Type, Total Qualified, Total Analysis, Total View
In Harmoni, Total options can be found under TYPE in the modify menu.
Like any row or column in an analysis, the Total row/column can display different value typesLearn more about value types and the modify menu., including counts (weighted or unweighted), percentages, averages, etc.
In addition to different value types, different Total options are available.
Unless different bases have been set on the elements included in the analysis, one of the Total options is used as the denominator The number the count is divided by, when calculating a percentage. or base See bases article for more information on changing bases. for the percentage and/or average calculations in the body of the table.

1. Total Options
There are four different Total options.
Total Options |
Description |
Useful when |
Total |
All records in the source(s)A source is a collection of data that is either in an imported file or in a connected data store. Learn more about Data Sources. |
You want the calculation to be based on all those in the relevant sources of the project. |
Total (qualified) |
All records excluding missing values. All records that have responses for the variables included in the analysis regardless of whether or not all items in the variable are included, or displayed in the analysis.
|
You want the calculation to be based on all those records included in the analysis variables rather than all records in the sources where the variable exists. |
Total (analysis) |
All records excluding missing values and unselected items. All records that have responses for the variable items selected in the analysis, regardless of whether or not those items have been hidden from the display. |
You want the calculation to be based on all those records included in the variable items selected and dropped into the analysis area regardless of being in the display. |
Total (view) |
All records excluding missing values, unselected and hidden items. All records that have responses for the variable items displayed in the analysis. Excludes records specific to items that have been hidden from the analysis display. |
You want the calculation to be based on all those records included in the variable items visible in the analysis area. |
A default Total option displays in an analysis and the default setting can be changed through personalization keys if required, or in the Project Settings by the Project Owner.
- The Total is displayed on the top row/leftmost column of each section of a table.
- The Total is a count of records with no double counting.
- Totals by default display weighted counts.
- Unweighted counts can be set as a default using personalization keys.Keys that can be applied at the user, site (all users), or company (all users) level. Contact support@infotools.com for more information.
After creating an analysis, you can change the total option using the modify menu.
You can find the different total options under TYPE.
Harmoni calculates one Total option at a time, but multiple value types can be displayed.
a) Total
- Includes all records in each of the sourcesA source is a collection of data that is either in an imported file or in a connected data store. Learn more about Data Sources. that contain the variables included in the analysis.
- Useful when you want the calculation to be based on all those in the relevant sources of the project.
- The Total will automatically adjust to reflect the sources in which the variable exists. This is particularly useful when you have rotating modules in your survey or when items (i.e. brands) come in and out of a survey.
Variable |
TotalAll records in the source(s) containing the variables. |
Top 2 |
Overall Satisfaction |
936 |
Top 2 = 23% Top 2 = 220/936 = 23% |
Activities |
936 |
Top 2 = 16% Top 2 = 152/936 = 16% |
Note: Totals may be different if the variable is not present in all sources
b) Total (qualified)
- All records excluding missing values.
- Includes all records that have responses for the variables included in the analysis, regardless of whether or not all items in the variable are included, or displayed, in the analysis.
- Useful when you want the calculation to be based on all those records included in the analysis variables rather than all records in the sources where the variable exists (i.e. Total).
- Total (qualified) may be useful when you want results to add to 100% for single response questions.
Total Option |
Overall Satisfaction Total |
Overall Satisfaction Top 2 |
TotalAll records in the source (s). |
936 |
Top 2 = 23% Top 2 = 220/936 = 23% |
Total (qualified)All records excluding missing values. | 294 |
Top 2 = 75% Top 2 = 220/294 = 36% |
c) Total (analysis)
- All records excluding missing values and unselected items.
- Includes all records that have responses for the variable items selected in the analysis, regardless of whether or not those items have been hidden from the analysis display.
- Useful when you want the calculation to be based on all those records included in the variable items selected and dropped into the analysis area regardless of being in the display.
- Total (analysis) will exclude items that are hidden in the project tree. For users, other than the project owner.
Example
Exclude/Don't drag into the analysis item "Not Sure".
Total Option |
Likelihood to Total |
Likelihood to Extremely Likely 10 |
TotalAll records in the source (s). |
936 |
10 = 20.9% 195/936 = 20.9% |
Total (qualified)All records excluding missing values. | 293 |
10 = 66.7% Top 2 = 195/293 = 66.7% |
Total (analysis) All records excluding missing values and unselected items. |
289 |
10 = 67.6% Top 2 = 195/289 = 67.6% |
d) Total (view)
- All records excluding missing values, unselected and hidden items.
- Includes all records that have responses for the variable items displayed in the analysis
- Excludes records specific to items that have been hidden from the analysis display.
- Useful when you want the calculation to be based on all those records included in the variable items visible in the analysis area.
- Total (view) will exclude items that are hidden in the project tree as well as those hidden from your analysis. For users, other than the project owner, who don't have the ability to see which items have been hidden in the project tree Total (view) and Total (analysis) will give the same results.
Example
Select the whole axis (all elements) and HIDE Not Sure. Elements visible in the view are included in the base. When you HIDE an element, it is removed from the base. Note that the result is the same as not selecting Not Sure when first creating the analysis, and using Total (analysis).

Where to from here?
The base identifies the values used as the denominator. The base only varies from the Total when specific bases have been applied.
